Actor Jude Law honoured in France 01/03/2007 00:00

LONDON, March 1, 2007 (AFP) - British actor Jude Law said Thursday he was "speechless" on receiving a prestigious award from the French government marking his achievements in cinema.

Law, star of films including "The Talented Mr Ripley", "Road to Perdition" and "Closer", received the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres medal at the French embassy in London.

"I am speechless. My mum and dad have lived in France for 15 years so really it is a country I share as my home," the 34-year-old actor said after receiving the medal.

His parents, Maggie and Peter, divide their time between London and Saumur, in western France.

Law also spoke of his love of French countryside and cinema, which he discovered as a teenager, before an audience which included Anthony Minghella, who directed "The English Patient" and "The Talented Mr Ripley".

Gerard Errera, the French ambassador, hailed him as "simply one of the most talented actors today".

"Your immense success has not been handed to you on a plate. It has been the product of hard work," he added.

The actor's father, Peter Law, said it was "so touching" that French people recognised his son had "so many different facets".
