LONDON - Nicolas Touzaint became Sunday the first French rider to win Britain's Badminton three-day event horse trials in the competition's 59-year history.

The 23-year-old reigning European champion and his horse Hildago de l'Ile made sure there was no repeat of their ducking in the lake last year on the cross-country course and then had only one error in the show jumping arena.

"It's always been my dream to win here," Touzaint said, "but I could not imagine it would ever happen."

Britain's Lucy Wiegersma finished in second place on Shaabrak, 1.4 penalty points adrift of Touzaint.

World champion Zara Phillips, the granddaughter of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, finished 16th on Glenbuck and 19th on Ardfield Magic Star.

Phillips rested her world and European championship mount Toytown, her intended ride at August's Olympic Games three-day event in Hong Kong.
