Tennis: US names Rodddick, Blake and Bryans to face France 28/03/2008 00:00
Andy Roddick, James Blake and brothers Mike and Bob Bryan were named Thursday by US Davis Cup captain Patrick McEnroe.
MIAMI, March 28, 2008 - Andy Roddick, James Blake and brothers Mike
and Bob Bryan were named Thursday by US Davis Cup captain Patrick McEnroe to the squad that will face France next month in a Davis Cup quarter-final tie.
The US lineup is the same that captured a record 32nd Davis Cup title last
December. It marks the record 10th time in a row that the same four men will
represent the United States in a Davis Cup tie.
"These guys have been amazing in their commitment to their country and
playing Davis Cup," McEnroe said. "I'm just thrilled they are back on and we
will be able to play a match at home as the champions."
"It's not just about winning and losing. We enjoy the process and enjoy
being together. I'm not surprised they want to come back. I know how much it
has meant to them. They put Davis Cup ahead of a lot of other things."
The US-France tie will be staged April 11-13 at Winston-Salem, North
Carolina, with the winner to face either Spain or Germany in a September
semi-final. The Americans defeated Spain at the same venue last year.
Mardy Fish, who defeated Swiss world number one Roger Federer last week in at ATP Masters Series semi-final at Indian Wells, will serve as a reserve and
practice with the team against a French squad that worries McEnroe.
"They are all dangerous. It's a great matchup," McEnroe said. "Each match
could be a Grand Slam semi-final. Each side could argue they could win each
match."
The indoor surface will be hard and quick, McEnroe said.
"I'm expecting it will be quite fast. Hopefully that will be an advantage
for us," McEnroe said. "We're going with the surface that we feel suits our
games. Hopefully that will be enough."
