Editor Michael Oreskes will leave the Paris-based newspaper to move into a top post at the Associated Press.

PARIS - International Herald Tribune editor Michael Oreskes said Thursday he will leave the Paris-based newspaper to move into a top post at the Associated Press.

"I'm becoming the managing editor of the Associated Press for United States news," he told AFP. "It's a newly created position supervising the coverage of the United States for both distribution in America and also in the rest of the world."

Oreskes, who also worked for many years at the New York Times, announced his departure to staffers Thursday afternoon, sources there said.

The 54-year-old, referring to his new position with the US-based news agency, said "this was just a too big opportunity to pass up".

He signalled he would probably leave in July and that his successor had not yet been chosen.

Oreskes became editorial chief at the Herald Tribune in May 2005 after holding a list of jobs at the New York Times, including deputy managing editor.

The International Herald Tribune is owned by the New York Times Company. It is sold in more than 180 countries and printed in 33 countries.
