EDF board to meet on bid with Centrica for British Energy 06/05/2008 00:00

The French energy group and the British company will meet to consider buying 35.2 percent of British energy, says news report.

6 May 2008

PARIS - The board of French energy group EDF is to hold a special meeting on Wednesday or Thursday on a possible bid with British company Centrica for British Energy, the La Tribune newspaper reported on Tuesday.

The newspaper said on its website that the meeting would consider purchasing the 35.2 percent of British Energy being offered for sale by the British government.

EDF declined to comment to AFP on the report.

The website said EDF group, which is also the biggest producer of nuclear energy in the world, was likely to opt to create a joint company from the offer in which gas group Centrica would have an interest of 25 percent, and EDF 75 percent.

The British newspaper The Daily Telegraph reported on Tuesday that EDF, which is controlled by the French state, was the clear favourite to buy British Energy and might even be the only bidder.
