01/09/2008Tapes confirm Spanair was planning plane switch

Tape recordings of conversations between Spanair representatives and aviation officials prove that the airline was on the verge of changing the plane before it crashed.

1 September 2008

MADRID -- Recordings of conversations between Spanair representatives and aviation officials have confirmed the airline was on the verge of changing the plane that crashed at Madrid's Barajas Airport on 20 August.

The recordings, in which Spanair officials can be heard asking Barajas' control tower for authorisation to switch planes and then cancelling the request, debunks claims by the airline that it had ever planned on changing the MD-82 aircraft for another after it experienced a technical fault.

The fault with a temperature sensor was fixed by company technicians and flight JK5022 was cleared for takeoff at 2.25pm.

It crashed at the end of the runway, killing 154 of the 173 passengers on board.

Remains of 152 of the victims had been returned to their families following a complicated identification process on Sunday.
