The travel magazine Lonely Planet has included Spain's southwesterly region of Extremadura as one of the top 10 destinations to visit in Europe in 2016.

It highlights the fact that Extremadura is “one of the most unexplored regions within one of the most visited countries of Europe.”

Nevertheless, Extremadura is now becoming one of those places that people want to visit that’s different and off the beaten track, away from the typical stereotype of a conventional holiday destination in Spain.

Amongst some of the attractions of this lesser well-known region of our country, as cited by the influential travel magazine, are “the best Roman ruins in Spain at Mérida; medieval jewels such as Trujillo and Cáceres, which have not turned into massive tourist traps; and the spectacular concentration of birds and the beauty of the Monfragüe National Park.”

The magazine also mentions that a number of old royal palaces have been reopened and some of the region’s castles have been restored, which add further attraction and places of interest to the region. And, for food lovers, Lonely Planet says thatsome of the best Spanish hams and cheeses are produced in this region.

Travelling to this region hasn’t always been easy, however, a greater number of flights to Extremadura’s main airport at Badajoz will help the region become more accessible to visitors from all over Europe and the world.

The Regional Council for Tourism is delighted with this nomination from Lonely Planet and says it’s a recognition of all that Extremadura has to offer culturally, environmentally, historically and naturally. The Council is also aware that Extremadura will now become a new place of interest for thousands of visitors not just from Europe but from all over the world.

Lonely Planet has published its recommendations for “The best of Europe 2016” across its webpages in English, Spanish, German, French, Portuguese, Italian, Russian and Czech.

And Extremadura shares its position on the list of the top 10 destinations to visit in Europe in 2016 with other places including Venice (Italy), the Peloponnese (Greece), the north of Dalmatia (Croatia) and the west coast of Tenerife.
