MADRID — Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said on Tuesday gross domestic product was expected to grow 3.8 percent in 2006.

The Spanish prime minister added consumer prices seen would go up by between 2.5 percent and 2.6 pc.

Speaking to delegates at a business forum in Madrid, Zapatero said the government also expects a budget surplus equivalent to 1.5 percent of GDP.

GDP growth in the following years will be "over 3 percent" Zapatero claimed.

The unemployment rate is expected to fall to 8 percent in 2007, he added.

But Spain still has one of the highest unemployment rates in Europe.
