NEW YORK - Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero will tell a UN meeting on hunger that each country should offer 0.7 percent of their GNP to solve the problem, sources said Monday.

Zapatero and Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos was expected to make the plea as he and foreign minister Angel Moratinos attended a UN General Assembly meeting in New York.

The General Assembly meeting was scheduled for Tuesday.

Zapatero was chairing the summit on eradicating hunger and poverty Monday which will be attended by more than 40 heads of state or government.

The Spanish premier is also scheduled to hold a series of bilateral meetings while in New York, including with Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Iraqi interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi.

Spain currently has troops serving in Afghanistan but within weeks of his election in Zapatero pulled Spanish forces out of Iraq in line with a key election pledge, having been a firm opponent of the US-led intervention there.
