KABUL — Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero made a surprise one-day visit to Afghanistan to inspect Spanish troops.

During the trip, the Spanish prime minister visited Herat in the west of Afghanistan, to attend ceremonies commemorating the deaths of 17 Spanish soldiers killed in a helicopter crash in August.

Zapatero planted trees in memory of each of the soldiers who died when a gust of wind caught their helicopter and it crashed shortly after take-off.

It was Zapatero's first inspection of Spanish troops overseas since he took office last year.

Spain has about 850 troops in Afghanistan as part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

Zapatero was accompanied by foreign secretary Miguel Angel Moratinos.and defence secretary Jose Bono.
