BARCELONA - Woody Allen enthralled fans in Barcelona Tuesday with a New Year's Day concert with his New Orleans Jazz Band before a crowd of 2,000 at the Catalan capital's Liceo opera hall.
Allen, who has gained almost as much fame in jazz circles for playing the clarinet as he has before the movie-going public for his films, kicked off the concert at 8:00 pm promising to "play as best as I can."
Wearing a black jumper and tan pants, Allen took centre stage for the first performance before a round of solos by band members. In a nod to Latin music, the group played Para Vigo me voy.
Speaking before the final curtain, Allen said the concert was a "personal homage to Barcelona." It is the fourth time the renowned film director has played in the city. He even gave an impromptu performance with his clarinet at the Hotel Casa Fuster's Café Vienés in June while recording his movie Vicky Cristina Barcelona, which is due to be released this year.
After the New Year's Day concert in Barcelona, Allen played the Kursaal in San Sebastián last night and is due to perform at A Coruña's opera hall tonight and in Santander at the Palacio de Festivales tomorrow.
