CORDOBA – A woman who took out a protection order against her husband died Friday after he attacked her.
Alfonsa Mohedano, 35, died in the Hospital Reina Sofía de Córdoba in Cordoba in Andalusia at 11am.
She was attacked Thursday by her former husband Pedro Cantillo, who hit her repeatedly on the head with a stick.
Mohedano is the 84th woman to have died at the hands of her ex-partner this year in Spain and is the latest victim of domestic violence.
Her death comes just a day after the Spanish government passed a tough new bill to combat domestic violence.
Police sources said Cantillo beat his former wife senseless.
She was taken first to a medical centre then to a hospital where she was treated for severe head injuries.
Cantillo has not been arrested.
The couple, who lived in a small village in Santaella, lost their daughter last year in an accident.
Cantillo suffered from depression and psychological problems. He blamed his wife for the death of their daughter.
In July this year, Mohedano reported her ex –husband for attacking her, the couple then split up and a judge granted a protection order.
Cantillo tried to kill himself twice before murdering his wife.
