BARCELONA — A driver who was on his way to work found the body of a young woman who had been murdered by the side of the road.
The woman, who was thought to have been a prostitute, had had her throat cut.
The shocking discovery was made on the N-II road at Sils, in Catalonia, north-east Spain. The driver called police at 7.45am when he saw the woman's dead body near a petrol station.
The woman's identity or her age were still unknown. The area has been sealed off, under the orders of a judge.
Police believe the woman was working as a prostitute as the area where her body was found is often frequented by women selling sex.
Officers were interviewing workers at the nearby petrol station to see if they had noticed anything. Police said another woman, who may have come from Eastern Europe, was found murdered in a ditch in March near Eix Transversal, which is close to Barcelona.
That woman had been strangled. Police have not commented on whether there could be a connection between the two murders.
