MADRID — Gail force winds and heavy rains were set to lash nine regions of Spain on Thursday.
Forecasters warned of winds of up to 120km per hour and heavy rains in the Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias, Galicia, Andalucia, Extremadura and Castilla y Leon.
In the Basque Country, winds of up to 90kmh were expected in Alava and 100kmh in other areas.
In Cantabria, driving gails of up to 100kmh would hit the coast, said the National Metereological Office.
Forecasters said winds could reach up to 100kmh in Asturias and would be slightly less in the Picos de Europa, hitting 90kmh in central zones and valleys.
Winds of up to 120kmh and 80mm of rain were set to fall over the next 12 hours in La Coruna, in Galicia.
In western Andalucia, violent gales of up to 90 kmh were set to hit Cadiz, Córdoba, Huelva and Seville.
Similar winds were also expected in Extremadura and Castilla y Leon.
Authorities warned airports and ports of the bad weather.
They also said people should remove any objects which could fall from windows, walls, or which were under trees.
