MADRID – Three-quarters of Spanish women going through the menopause are happy with their sex lives, according to a new survey.
The Spanish Association for the Study of the Menopause (AEEM) interviewed 3,000 women aged 45-65.
It found that women who had regular sex were less likely to suffer anxiety, had a better relationship with their partner and felt psychologically better during the menopause.
However, the study showed that 25.8 percent of women have unsatisfactory sex lives, possibly due to the changes they experience due to the loss of oestrogen during the menopause.
For these women, said the AEEM's president Santiago Palacios, sexual relations become less frequent "or cease to exist".
As many as 43 percent of women in this age bracket had problems having sex, she stated.
Some 40 experts from the AEEM helped interview the women, with sexual satisfaction evaluated according to womens' "individual perceptions" of their sex lives, rather than "the number of sexual relations".
