MADRID — The intense cold, heavy snows high winds across much of Spain should lift over the weekend, forecasters predicted.
There was still large snowfalls in the mountain areas of much of the country.
And last night was the coldest during the entire winter so far, according to data from the National Meteorological Institute.
There were expected to be more snow falls on Friday in Valencia, Alicante and Albacete.
Up to 40 smaller roads across Spain had been closed and police urged drivers to take extreme caution.
Many drivers used chains on their wheels to allow them to drive with more security.
Later on Friday and during Saturday there were expected to be heavy rainfalls, particularly in the southeast of the country.
Even the Canary Islands would be affected by these rainfalls, forecasters said.
