BARCELONA - Three women have died in Barcelona in the space of three weeks as a result of surgical interventions related to weight loss or plastic surgery. The last death occurred on Tuesday, a day after a woman underwent a procedure to remove excess skin and fatty tissue from her abdomen.
The first victim, Laura Raya, died on 11 January in Barcelona after an operation to have her stomach stapled. Raya was 19 years old, weighed 105 kg and was 5' 1" tall. The health department concluded on Wednesday that from the treatment she received at the private clinic, "it can be inferred that there were supposed infractions of the health code." The case has been handed over to the courts.
The three women had opted for private clinics to avoid long waiting lists for public institutions.
"There is more risk at private clinics, as they do not have all of the control mechanisms that are present in general hospitals," said Miquel Bruguera, president of the Doctors' College in Barcelona.
