MADRID - Spanish police have confiscated 16 tons of hashish and arrested 63 suspected drug smugglers within a week around the country, local media reported Tuesday.

On the island of Mallorca, more than six tons of hashish were seized and 36 suspected smugglers arrested.

In the region of Oliva and Denia near the eastern coastal city of Valencia, officials ceased four tons of hashish, while on the Costa Brava in the north-east and in the region of Fuengirola in the south three tons were taken.

According to police, the seizures were the result partly of clear weather, which together with calm seas had attracted many smugglers to bring hashish across the Mediterranean using small motorboats.
