CADIZ - A healer from Cádiz was acquitted of fraud for alleging she could cure a terminally ill cancer patient in exchange for EUR 18,000 and a chicken.

The Supreme Court overturned an earlier ruling by a Cádiz court sentencing Nuria Montero Gallardo to two and a half years in prison for fraud.

The Supreme Court ruled "hope is a human emotion that is understandable, but confidence in magic cannot receive the protection of criminal law. The deception is so crude and unacceptable that it cannot be used as the basis for a crime of fraud".

In February 2001, the ill man’s two children took out a bank loan to pay Montero’s fee.

The healer said she would sacrifice the bird to extract the organs corresponding
to their father’s diseased organs.

In July 2001, the man died.
