MADRID — Five men who hid in a ventilation shaft were arrested as they prepared to commit their 16th bank robbery.
Special forces police officers were lying in wait for the gang who hid all night in the ventilation shaft until the bank manager arrived for work in the morning.
Police began to follow the gang after one of the gang was identified from an earlier robbery.
They are thought to have used the same method to rob other banks in the Madrid area.
The men, all Spaniards aged between 29 and 52, have been linked to at least 15 other robberies in recent months.
They were granted bail after appearing in court.
