MADRID — The Spanish author Francisco Umbral is to be awarded the Madrid gold medal of honour.

The award was made by the president of Madrid, Esperanza Aguirre, as part of a day of celebration in Madrid.

In 2001, Umbral received the most important award for literature in the Spanish language, the Cervantes prize.

King Juan Carlos of Spain made the presentation at a ceremony at the town of Alcala de Henares, the birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes.

Francisco Umbral has written numerous novels, poems and essays. His best known works are 'Las Ninfas' and 'Mortal y Rosa'.
