MADRID — Unrest in Iraq will last years, the assistant United Nations secretary general Rima Khalaf Hunaidi told an international conference in the Spanish capital.

"The elections in Iraq were an important landmark and I believe they were inspiring for many Arabs," Hunaidi said.

"But what is happening in Iraq, what we are facing in the region will stay for years."

Invited to Spain by the Spanish Elcano Royal Institute think tank, Hunaidi, director of the UN development programme regional bureau for Arab States, said winning the military battle would be difficult enough.

Above all, she stressed, "you need to change mindsets".

"This requires much more than military action," she warned.
