MAHON — A two-year-old British boy has drowned in a hotel pool while on a family holiday to Menorca in Spain.
The British Foreign Office said the drowning occurred on Saturday morning, but would not confirm details of where in Britain the family are from, the BBC reported.
Consular staff are offering their assistance to the family, who arrived on the island on Friday, reports say.
A spokeswoman for tour operator First Choice said police had asked the family to stay on the island until Monday.
The spokeswoman said: "We did look into bringing them home last night, but with the police wanting to do a report that wasn't possible.
"Our reps at the resort are working very closely with the family and local police.
"Obviously our thoughts are with his family and friends at the moment."
A report quoting local police says the incident is being treated as an accident.
The family were staying at a resort around 15 miles (24km) from the island's capital, Mahon.
