MADRID — Two lesbians have become legal mothers of a child, setting a precedent.
More than a year after Spain legalised gay marriage, the Spanish daily El Pais reported a court has recognized the right of two lesbians to both be the legal mothers of a child.
Mariaangeles Z.E. and Antonia M.M. have been described as Mother 1 and Mother 2 on the birth certificate, after a judge in Algeciras ruled in their favour.
The judge agreed the second woman should not have to adopt the child, as the Assisted Reproduction Law says.
But it is likely the ruling will face an appeal by a higher court as it goes against the legalisation introduced last year.
