Madrid - Two men died yesterday when their twin-propeller four-seater plane crashed just a few meters from the M-40 freeway while attempting to land at the Cuatro Vientos airport, located in the southern Madrid neighborhood of Carabanchel. The crash site was only 700 meters from a shopping center and a gas station.
According to a spokesman of the emergency services in Madrid, one of the men who died was a pilot instructor and the other one a student. Both were around 30 years old.
A spokesman for the DGT traffic authority said that the crash had not affected traffic on the M-40, despite the close proximity of the wreckage. The Cuatro Vientos airport has been the subject of protests by local residents after a number of accidents.
