BARCELONA — A natural gas explosion tore through a four-storey apartment building near Barcelona. killing two people and injuring 18.

The blast occurred while workers were trying to fix a gas leak in the town of Santa Coloma de Gramenet.

One of the workers was killed, and a resident of the building also died.

Three of the 18 people wounded were said to be in a serious condition.

The explosion destroyed much of the building, which had been evacuated, and damaged a second building.

Gas explosions have claimed 26 lives in Spain in the past five years.

Many are caused by unsafe bottled gas canisters which are still relatively commonly used.
