The body of two migrants were found aboard a boat carrying four other African migrants which was detected southeast of Cartagena on Spain's southern coast, the local government said Thursday.

Madrid-- "Two of the passengers were weakened and apparently suffering from dehydration. They had apparently been drinking sea water," it said in a statement.

While the government did not specify the nationality of the illegal migrants, public radio RNE said they were from Algeria.

Spain has been a magnet in recent years for African migrants hoping to reach Europe.

Authorities fear many of the thousands who try to reach Spain by sailing in simple boats from Africa die of thirst, hunger or exposure.

But increased maritime surveillance combined with the recession Spain entered into late last year, which has caused the unemployment rate to soar to 18 percent, has stemmed the flow of migrants.
