MADRID - Troubled Spanish first division club Zaragoza announced late Tuesday that their new coach would be Javier Irureta.
Irureta, who guided Deportivo to the Liga title in 2000 and to the King's Cup in 2002, has been out of contract since being sacked by Betis last season.
He takes over at Zaragoza from Ander Garitano, whose reign proved to be was one of the briefest in the history of Spanish football.
Garitano was in the job for just eight days, having taken over from the sacked Victor Fernandez on 14 January.
Garitano surprisingly resigned on Tuesday without offering any explanation. The Spanish media believe he was annoyed at club president Eduardo Bandres' refusal to immediately sell off undisciplined Argentine midfielder Andres D'Alessandro.
Zaragoza are in disappointing 11th place in La Liga, and are already out of the UEFA Cup and the King's Cup.
