MADRID – Two days of mourning were declared on Monday in a town in Leon after a woman died in yet another suspected case of domestic violence.
Julia Alonso Menéndez, 39, is believed to have been killed by her husband Antonio Marcos, 42, on Sunday.
The police were called to a property in Carrizo de la Ribera in Leon by a neighbour who heard a heated argument and suspected blows.
When the police arrived, there was extensive blood on the stairs and they broke down the door of a flat to find Menéndez dead on the kitchen floor.
Marcos was later found to have committed suicide in a cattle shed.
The couple leave behind two children who are now staying with the father of Marcos.
It is understood that Marcos had already been found guilty of hitting his wife in front of his children on 10 July, but Menéndez did not receive any police protection after the incident.
The town hall of Carrizo de la Ribera called a special meeting on Monday afternoon to vote for the official mourning.
The Platform against Domestic Violence in Leon also announced it would hold a demonstration this week, with another white ribbon added to those already displayed by the organisation, to symbolise another murder.
