BARCELONA- Catalan culture is to be honoured at the world's biggest book fair in Frankfurt in 2007.

The Spanish central government and the regional Catalan government are to add their support to give Catalonia a 'guest of honour' status at the Frankfurt Book Fair.

"Catalan culture stands out for its unusual creativity and popular base," said book fair director Volker Neumann.

"This is proved by internationally successful authors like Vasquez Montalban, Juan Goytisolo or Carlos Ruiz Zafon."

Zafon's bestseller The Shadow of the Wind has proved a huge success not just in his native Spain, but in Germany, Britain and the US.

Based in Barcelona, it tells the story of a boy who becomes determined to discover the past of a writer whose books are being destroyed mysteriously.

The Frankfurt Book Fair, held every October, is the world's biggest show of new books and the main international marketplace for dealing in translations and other rights to books.
