LLEIDA - Three workmen died when they fell into a silo used to store dead animals, firefighters said Wednesday.

The accident happened at the factory of a company called  GREFACSA, at Térmens near Lleida in Catalonia, north-east Spain at about 1.32pm.

One man fell into the silo where dead animals' bodies were stored.

Firefighters who attended the scene said the man appeared to have died from the animal gases in the silo.

Two other men who tried to save him also fell in and were killed in the same way.

The company produces animal oils.

Firefighters arrived too late to save the three men.
