MADRID — Three women have been killed in as many days, all victims of domestic violence, police said.
In the latest incident, an Irish woman was murdered in front of her three children in a flat in San Fulgencio, near Alicante.
She appeared to have been beaten and was lying in a pool of blood.
Police had to subdue her husband who was under the influence of alcohol and drugs and in a state of shock.
Neighbours had called emergency services after hearing shouting.
The husband, also from Ireland, was arrested on Sunday.
The couple were spending two months on holiday in the resort, but had been heard rowing frequently.
Neighbours said they had been drinking heavily, taking drugs and throwing loud parties.
They had two boys and a girl, aged one, five and eight years old, who were left by the swimming pool at night "out of control", neighbours added.
Over the weekend, a 32-year-old Spanish woman was stabbed to death, allegedly by her partner in Torrevieja, Alicante.
And on Sunday, in Valles, a village near Valencia, an 82-year-old man committed suicide by throwing himself off a balcony after clubbing his wife to death.
The 78-year-old woman was beaten with a club around her head.
In Astorga, in León, the body of a 17-year-old woman was found beaten so badly she could not be recognised.
Police believe she was the victim of domestic violence.
The Socialist government has introduced new legislation since it came to power to crack down on domestic violence, toughening sentences for offenders, introducing specialist judges and prosecutors and offering victims better security.
