OVIEDO -A desperate search was underway to find an elderly woman in the rubble of a building where three other women died after a gas explosion.
Firefighters were searching through the remains of the block of flats after the blast which killed three women and injured at least 20 neighbours.
Nine survivors were taken to hospital for treatment for injuries ranging from burns to broken bones and cuts and bruises.
The tragedy happened in Langreo, near Oviedo in Asturias in northern Spain late on Wednesday night.
Firefighters still hoped to find the pensioner, called Leontina Montejo Martin, alive among the debris.
She lived on her own in a flat on the seventh floor of the block of flats where the explosion happened.
The dead women were two pensioners and a teenager.
Two pensioners were named as Carmen Álvarez Fernández and Alicia Argüelles Felgueroso but the name of the teenager has not been released.
Firefighters said that a gas leak was the most probable cause of the accident.
At least 150 neighbours had to be evacuated from five neighbouring buildings.
They were being housed in hotels or staying with relatives.
The Langreo town council has declared a day of public mourning in memory of the victims.
