BARCELONA — Three children aged between 2 and 5 died after their flat caught fire in the town of L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, near Barcelona, police said.

The three youngsters suffered burns on up to 95 percent of their bodies, as well as carbon monoxide poisoning, sources said.

Injured in the fire were the children's mother and their little sister, both of whom were admitted to Barcelona's Sant Joan de Deu Hospital.

The fire broke out around midday on the second floor of an apartment building.

Authorities do not yet know how the blaze started, but it is thought the children may have been playing with matches or something with which to start a fire.

In the apartment at the time were the mother and her four young children.

The flames were put out by firefighters of the regional Catalan government.
