SALOU – Civil guards have arrested three people accused of rigging cash points in this popular Mediterranean seaside tourist resort so they could steal bank cards belonging to foreigners, authorities said on Monday.

According to officials, the trio would place a tape in the slot of a cash point so when a victim put in his or her bank card, the machine would not work and the card would not be returned.

While offering to help the victim, one of the suspects would secretly record the PIN number.

Once the victim entered the bank to complain about the problem, the suspect would then remove the tape, eject the card and use it to withdraw cash from another bank.

A civil guard spokesman said the authorities learned of the scam and posted agents to watch out for the trio whom they eventually caught with five cards from British and Dutch banks, along with 560 euros in cash.
