SEVILLE- The Spanish Guardia Civil have arrested three people for allegedly recruiting 112 Romanians who were found working illegally on an olive farm.

In a police operation – codenamed olive –a Spanish businessman was arrested along with two other Romanians, who acted as intermediaries.

The workers were discovered working without work permits on a farm at Salteras near Seville.

Some workers did not have either permission to work or live in Spain. Others had legal residence in Spain, but no work permits.

The Guardia Civil operation is the latest stage of an on-going campaign to stop the exploitation of illegal immigrants.

So far, there are 199 cases pending involving exploitation of illegal workers, many of which are involved in working on farms.

Often immigrant workers are paid very low wages and live in appalling conditions on farms in remote areas.
