MADRID -- Police were searching Thursday night for two thieves who robbed a bank in a town south of Madrid, took the bank manager hostage and made their escape in a stolen police car.

The two men, who appeared to be Spanish, entered the La Caixa branch in Torrejón de Velasco Thursday morning armed with a pistol and a knife. They forced bank clients and staff into a side room and made the bank manager hand over piles of cash.

When the police arrived, they took the bank manager hostage and made off in a police car.

The robbers dumped the police car in the nearby town of Humanes after releasing the bank manager unharmed. They then stole another vehicle and headed for the train station where police lost their trail.
