MADRID _ Police authorities detained on Monday a well-known Madrid thief known as El Jamonero, the ham slicer.

The 49-year-old, identified as Jorge Juan G.C., is accused of robbing 23 small stores in the central Madrid neighborhood of Salamanca.

The police had been on El Jamonero's trail for several months after he had robbed a number of stores using the same modus operandi: threatening his victims with a 17-centimeter ham-slicing knife.

Apart from robbing stories, El Jamonero has a long police record for other crimes, including drug trafficking.
