A 10-year-old girl has become the youngest in Spain's Andalucia region to give birth, local authorities said on Tuesday.

The young mother and her infant girl are in "perfect health" with their family, Andalucian government official Micaela Navarro told reporters, registering her "great surprise" at the birth.

The birth took place last Tuesday in the southern town of Jerez, the Diaro de Jerez daily reported, adding mother and child left hospital at week's end.

The father is also a minor said Navarro, who did not reveal his age.

Local authorities are considering whether social services should take responsibility of the girl and her baby, or whether they can remain with their family.
