Madrid - Spanish police said Friday they have arrested an Italian suspected of being the head of a network that smuggled South American cocaine into Europe.

The man, born in 1957 but whose identity was not revealed, was held in the southern resort of Marbella, on the Costa del Sol.

He is suspected of running a gang that brought cocaine from Colombia and Brazil into Europe, in particular to northern Italy's Lombardy region, for 10 years.

An Italian court condemned him to 12 and a half years in prison for drug trafficking.

But he fled Italian justice and had been the subject of an international arrest warrant since 28 July, police said in a statement.
