Madrid – Spanish police have arrested a suspected member of the Basque separatist group ETA who is believed to have killed six people, including a pregnant woman, the interior ministry said on Thursday.

Juan Manuel Inciarte, 55, was detained at Madrid's airport on a flight from Mexico, which expelled him for being in the country illegally, it said.

Between 1983 and 1985 he is suspected of killing five Spanish policemen and the pregnant wife of one of the officers.

He later fled to Nicaragua and is believed to have resided in Mexico since 1996, the ministry said.

ETA is blamed for the deaths of 828 people in its decades-long campaign for an independent Basque homeland encompassing parts of northern Spain and southwest France.
