MADRID - At least one small explosive device detonated on Wednesday in northern Spain along a route used by the Tour de France cycling race, the Spanish Interior Ministry said.

Spanish media said the blast or blasts were preceded by a call in the name of the Basque separatist group ETA, but the ministry said it could not confirm this. The newspaper El Pais said the Tour de France riders had apparently already passed by when the blast occurred in the town of Belagua in the Navarra region. The race's itinerary took it into Spain on Wednesday.
