MADRID - A suspect wanted in connection with the attempted kidnapping of a young girl in Telde, Gran Canaria last week was in police custody on Wednesday.

Authorities in Las Palmas said a man was being questioned after a 10-year-old girl escaped her would-be captor on 4 January by screaming when a 35-year-old man tried to force her to get into his truck. The girl suffered bruises and scratches as she fought off the man. Police are likely to question him about two other children, who went missing on the island in 2006, Sara Morales and Yeremi Vargas. Both are still missing.

Meanwhile, searchers combing the area around Mijas on the Costa del Sol yesterday found no sign of 15-year-old Amy Fitzpatrick of Ireland, who disappeared on New Year's Day.
