RABAT - Six Moroccans who were trying to enter Spain hidden in a Spanish truck's cargo were found in the port of Tangiers on the verge of death from suffocation, Moroccan authorities said Friday.

The six men, aged between 19 and 28, had broken into the cargo trailer of the truck, which was parked at the port prior to being loaded onto a boat which would have taken it across the Straits of Gibraltar.

They hid themselves among the cargo, but once inside, lack of fresh air almost killed them.

While the driver of the truck filled out the paperwork and went through the other procedures required to cross the Straits to the Spanish port of Algeciras, several people heard shouts and banging from inside the truck.

The police were called to the scene and, because the driver could not be found, they had to force open the trailer's cargo door to get the hidden men out.

Two of the men, who were showing symptoms of asphyxia, were rushed to the Mohammed V Hospital, where they were revived.
