MADRID - A Moroccan would-be immigrant died of suffocation in a compartment beneath a saloon car roof as his relatives tried to smuggle him into Spain, police said Tuesday.

The body of the 25 year-old was found in Algeciras region, in southern Spain, a spokesman said.

A Moroccan couple has been arrested for allegedly causing death by negligence, the spokesman said.

The accused man and woman aged 41 and 24, resident in Germany, had fixed an air supply into the roof luggage compartment.

"But when they closed up the compartment, the airpipe became blocked and the man died of suffocation," the spokesman said.

The deceased man was understood to be a brother-in-law of one of the accused.

The couple's two children travelling with them were taken into care at a reception centre.

The pair, whose identity was not released, were later to appear before an examining magistrate.
