An elderly Spanish tourist was missing Wednesday after fire swept through a sailing boat off Turkey's southwestern coast, the Anatolia news agency reported.

The crew radioed for help when flames erupted from one of the cabins and raced through the rest of the Turkish boat as it sailed between the popular resorts of Marmaris and Fethiye with 18 Spanish tourists on board.

The coast guard, backed by a firefighting helicopter, rescued 17 of the tourists and the five-strong crew after extinguishing the fire which left the boat gutted, the report said.

An 80-year-old tourist, in whose cabin the fire started, was missing.

The cause of the fire was not immediately clear.

The survivors were treated in hospital at Fethiye and were not in a life-threatening condition, Anatolia said.

An investigation was underway.
