MADRID -  A Spanish soldier was killed and another injured when their armed car crashed in an accident in Kosovo on Tuesday.

The armoured car overturned in the Osojane Valley in Istok, the Spanish zone in Kosovo, the Ministry of Defence said.

The soldiers were carrying out a routine patrol when the accident happened just after 1pm on Tuesday.

Two of the four occupants of the armoured car were injured. They were given medical attention by Spanish troops at the scene of the crash but one died.

Defence ministry sources named the dead soldier as José Javier Colorado Ramírez, 19, from Puertollano, in Ciudad Real.

The injured officer has a broken forearm and a severe stomach injury.

He was named as Juan Carlos Correa Muñoz, 22, from Leganés, Madrid.

Spain has 550 soldiers in Kosovo conducting peacekeeping duties as part of an international force.
