BARCELONA -(AFP) - Spanish police prevented a broken-hearted man from committing suicide with a crude bomb fashioned out of two tanks of butane gas and fireworks, a police spokesman said Tuesday.

Moulay Abel, 30, was stopped by police on Sunday on a highway near Jonquera in the northeastern region of Catalonia just across the French border after being found to be driving "in a suspicious way", the spokesman told AFP.

In addition to the gas tanks fitted with fireworks, police found a Japanese samurai sword, or katana, in his car.

The man, who is from the Alsace region of France, told police that he planned to commit suicide because of a failed love affair, the spokesman said.

Police closed the highway in both directions while they deactivated the bomb. The man was detained for the illegal possession of explosives.
