Spanish police smash two drug gangs
Spanish police have smashed two drug trafficking gangs in the south of the country, seizing 3.6 tonnes of hashish and arresting eight people, the interior ministry said Wednesday.
Officers seized the drugs in two phases in the fishing port of Roquetas de Mar, in Almeria province, the ministry said in a statement.
The operation allowed police to uncover two gangs which brought the drugs into the port, "pretending to unload fish or seafood," it said.
Spain's proximity to Morocco, a key source of hashish, and its close ties with its former colonies in Latin America, a major cocaine-producing region, have made it a major gateway into Europe for drug traffickers.
