Spanish police said Tuesday they have arrested three people and seized 1.5 tonnes of cocaine from a British-flagged yacht in the high seas off the coast of Portugal.

The operation, which was carried out with the cooperation of British police, began early this month when police became aware of the yacht moored in Port of Spain, the capital of the Caribbean nation of Trinidad and Tobago, they said in a statement.

Spanish officers boarded the vessel off the coast of Portugal, arresting two French citizens and one Spaniard on board.

They also discovered 1.515 tonnes of cocaine hidden in a false roof of two of the cabins.

Spain's close ties with its former colonies in Latin America, a major cocaine-producing region, and its extensive coastline have made it Europe's main entry point for the drug.
